Saskatchewan on CNN...?

Q: Since when does CNN mention Saskatchewan in its news coverage?

A: When it is experiencing a hot job and home sales market!

The hugely popular US news channel's web article was titled Saskatchewan a jobs 'hot spot' in Canada," and CNN even quoted an American relocation service company president as saying he's moving more people to Saskatchewan than ever before. Of course, these (extremely lucky) US executives need to find homes when they move to the prairie province.

Gord Archibald, executive officer of the Association of Regina Realtors, says that demand for resale housing in Regina , SK is "above historic levels, and by that I meanpre-2007 (levels)," adding that 2007 and 2008 were anomalies in the market as overheated years.

Archibald notes that the prairie province's local economy and in-migration have contributed to the strong resale housing market, along with the Spring resurgence of home sales.

A closer look at recent Saskatoon real estate statistics reveals some pretty positive numbers:

·       The average sale price for Feb. '09 was sharply higher for the second consecutive month - rising from $293,073 in January to $305,130 in February.

·       The median sale price moved up to $280,000 from $277,450 in Jan. '09.

·       The three-month average increased $1,500 over the previous month, and finished about $4,000 ahead of February 2009’s number of $288,677.

(We draw to your attention that the average price means relatively nothing... Markets are local – you need to find out exactly what is happening in your marketplace.)

You're Just Jealous, America!

CNN couldn't resist a jab at the chilly climate of Saskatchewan in their article, as the first sentence indicates: "Normally, 'hot spot' isn't the first phrase that comes to mind when talking about Saskatchewan, Canada."

The web page even made a point of prominently displaying the average January temperature for Saskatoon - low of -11.1 C (12 F) and average July temp - high of 25 C (77 F) - right beside the good-news economic story! Hmm, is this a wee bit of economy/house market envy by the Americans we see at play here...?

Aside: CENTURY 21 Conexus Realty Ltd.- with seven offices across Saskatchewan - was recently named by CENTURY 21 Canada as the #1 firm in Canada for both production and units volume for the third year running as part of the real estate organization's annual awards.
