The Fort Garry community, east of the industrial areas, is mature and includes a mix of single family homes, condominiums, and apartments. This community straddles the Red River in the east and Waverley St in the west, and is nestled between Taylor Ave to the north and Bishop Grandin Blvd to the south. Fort Garry is primarily a middle class residential area and is very ethnically diverse. The community is midway between the University of Manitoba campus and downtown and is snug against several curves in the Red River which have many prestigous river properties. Fort Garry encompasses the neighbourhoods of East Fory Garry, West Fort Garry, Wildwood against the Red River, Beaumont nestled against the industrial parks to the west, and Maybank in the south.

Pembina Trails School Divsion manages schools in Fort Garry, with the exception of St Maurice School (K-12) and St John's Ravenscourt (K-12). There are six schools in total, three elementary schools; Ecole Crane (M-4),Oakenwald School (K-6), Ralph Maybank School (K-6), one elementary/middle school; General Byng School (K-9), one middle school; Ecole Viscount Alexander (6-9) and one high school; Vincent Massey Collegiate (10-12)
Pembina Highway is the main south Winnipeg shopping district with many stores along its length. Area residents also head north to Grant Park Shopping Centre, and south to Pembina Crossing, both malls with movie theatres.
The area offers a wide range of recreational pursuits: it has the Wildwood and Crescent Drive golf courses along the Red River and Arnason’s driving range just north of Bishop Grandin and has the Winnipeg Soccer Complex on its western boundary, and the Soccer Spectrum, a boat launch at Crescent Park Drive, and the beautiful Fort Whyte Centre for Environmental Education to its west. The community has two community centres that provide indoor and outdoor recreation and leisure activities; Westridge Community Centre and Victoria Community Centre.
