North Kildonan became incorporated as the R.M. of North Kildonan on January 1, 1925. North Kildonan was a farming community and in 1928, the first Mennonites settled there. This was done to fulfill immigration requirements to be farmers and yet be close to city employment opportunities. In 1972, North Kildonan merged with the city of Winnipeg in Unicity and now North Kildonan is a ward within Winnipeg represented by a member of Winnipeg City Council. This community is bounded on the south by Roberta and McLeod Ave, on the west by Henderson Hwy and the Red River, on the north by the Perimeter and on the east by Lagimodiere Blvd. North Kildonan includes many neighbourhoods such as Sun Valley, Algonquin Estates, River East, All Seasons Estates, Oakwood Estates and Old Kildonan.

Sun Valley is a neighbourhood located in North Kildonan. This neighbourhood is located east of Gateway Rd, north of McLeod, south of the Perimeter and west of Lagimodiere Blvd. This area is well known for Kilcona Park which offers offers a wide variety of recreational activities and resources including ponds, open fields, soccer pitches, and baseball diamonds and also the Gateway Rec Centre which includes two indoor arenas and an indoor soccer field.

Algonquin Estates is also a neighbourhood in North Kildonan and is situated east of the Red River, south of the Perimeter, west of Raleigh St and north of Douglas Ave. This area is well known for The Bunn's Creek Trail which is a scenic walking path and bike trail, meandering its way from McIvor Avenue and Raleigh Street to the Red River. The trail ends on a high bank where a wonderful view of the river awaits anyone who completes the nearly 2.5 km trail.

There are a number of small plazas along Henderson Highway in the west of the community, and along Nairn Ave on the southern edge. The area's mega-mall is Kildonan Place, just to the southeast.

North Kildonan is home to many green spaces, the largest of which is Kilcona Park, located on Springfield Avenue east of Lagimodiere Boulevard The park offers a wide variety of recreational activities and resources including ponds, open fields, soccer pitches, and baseball diamonds. Located within the park is Harbour View Golf Course & Recreation Complex, which provides visitors with the opportunity to play tennis, lawn bowling, nine holes of golf, or go on pedal boat rides. Winter activities include tobogganing, skating, and cross-country skiing.

The community has a wide range of recreational opportunities. There are several parks along the Red River and a series of parks running the length of Bunn's Creek though the northern part of the community. Golfers have the Rossmere Golf & Country Club in the middle of the community and Harbour View to the east.

Gateway Recreation Centre is home to numerous, year-round sports teams including hockey, baseball, softball, and outdoor and indoor soccer. The fields are open to the public when not in use. There are two indoor rinks and an indoor soccer field.
