South End

Halifax’s South End is located on the southern half of the Halifax peninsula in Halifax’s urban centre. Quinpool Road acts like an arbitrary border between the South End and the West End of the city.

The South End was home to large mansions and estates and remains today as one of the more prosperous areas of the city, home to a largely middle class demographic. The South End is also home to thousands of students attending the 5 degree granting Universities in the area.

Many homes close to the Universities have been converted into student housing and many new buildings have been built to accomodate the thousands of students that come into the area each year.

 Pt Pleasant Park Entrance

The South End is also home to Point Pleasant Park, a large partially forested municipal park located at the southern-most tip of the peninsula. Point Pleasant Park is home to many runners, cyclists, and walkers and offers hiking trails and waterfront vistas.  In the Summer months, the Park is home to Shakespeare by the Sea theatre company which performs plays throughout the park.

Halifax Container Terminal

Adjacent to Point Pleasant Park is the South End Container Terminal which consists of 72 acres of land and 3,200 linear feet of dock. The terminal is leased to Halterm Container Terminal which receives container ships from all over the world. As well, the Grain elevators located in the South End provide a secure supply of feed for the livestock industry in the Province and provides export opportunities for wood pellets and grain products. The grain elevator services Dover Mills.

Halifax Waterfront

The South End of Halifax includes the Halifax Waterfront and the Downtown both of which are vibrant parts of the city. The Halifax Waterfront is home to restaurants, shops and tourist attractions as well as various office and residential complexes. It also boasts the Seaport Farmer’s Market, a year-round farmers market offering fresh foods of all kinds as well as the award winning Pier 21 Museum. Thousands of tourists converge on the Halifax Waterfront every year to take in its many festivals and attractions.
