GTA Centre

Many uptown residents have been buzzing with excitement since last November, when Graeme Roustan, the chairman of Bauer Performance Sports Limited, announced plans to build a $325-million multipurpose sports and entertainment complex.

The GTA Centre, the name of the proposed facility, would be situated north of Highway 407 and west of Kennedy Road. With its 20,000-seat capacity, it is expected to rival the Air Canada Centre.

The proposal was finally approved this Thursday after Markham municipal councillors voted in favour 11-2 to borrow money. The rest of the money would come from charges to developers and surcharges on arena tickets; town councillors have stated that there will be no increase in property tax to Markham residents.

Aside from all the exciting opportunities this massive project would create, there is talk that the facility may woo a second National Hockey League to southern Ontario. (With the Toronto Maple Leafs consistently missing the playoffs, a second professional hockey team may be just what our city needs to restore hockey faith of Ontario residents.)

Roustan hopes construction will commence this year.
