Today Charlottetown is a thriving city, having seen tremendous development and rejuvenation in the past ten years. One such recent development was the building of the Jean Canfield Government office in the city core. It is one of the most environmentally friendly buildings ever constructed by Public Works and Government Services Canada and can house up to 500 employees. Several years ago, the Atlantic Technology Centre was built downtown on the corner of Queen and Fitzroy St.. With the building of this facility, the Information Technology industry in Prince Edward Island flourished, attracting many IT and media companies doing business throughout North America and abroad.

The University of Prince Edward Island is also another major employer in Charlottetown as well as a rapidly growing destination campus for university students. It's reputation continues to build and is attracting more and more students each year. Some notable mentions about UPEI, as it's known, it has the Atlantic Veterinary College, the only school of it's kind in the in the maritimes and one of only five in Canada. UPEI also has a very highly regarded athletic program. In 2009 the UPEI Alumni Canada Games Place was built to support the growing athletics programs and to host the 2009 Canada Games

Homes in the Charlottetown area vary in style but throughout older parts of the city, you will see large Victorian style heritage homes on tree lined streets. Many of these homes had been owned originally by wealthy shipbuilders in the late 1800's. Many of these homes have been restored and are now Bed and Breakfasts or quaint apartments.
