25 kilometres north-east of Buckingham, lies the Municipality of Mulgrave-et-Derry. The municipality of Mulgrave et Derry is connected on its southern border to the municipality of Mayo. The nearest city for both Mayo and ‘Mulgrave et Derry’ municipalities is the city of Buckingham.
The area was settled in the nineteenth century mainly by Irish and German immigrants as well as French Canadians. The main industries which drive the economics of the municipality were, and still are, farming and forestry as well as the manufacturing of potash.
The region has many beautiful lakes, including Gull Lake, Hawk Lake, Lady Lake, Smallian Lake, Lac St. Sixte, Lac La Blanche and Little Lake.
Hawk Lake is an easy one-hour drive from Ottawa/Gatineau. Along a double lane highway that brings you most of the way there, you'll wind your way through the scenic Quebec countryside full of family farms and sparkling lakes. The clear waters of Hawk Lake and Lady Lake are great fishing lakes with gray, speckled and red trout (a species indigenous to Quebec) the most prominent.
Careful development of these lakes has insured that the water quality is excellent and tests drinkable.
Today, the entire area is a favourite cottage destination for National Capital Region residents and for residents of the greater Montreal area as well.
Just to its north you will find the Réserve faunique de Papineau-Labelle. Straddling the Outaouais and Laurentides regions, this wilderness is geographically unique. It's the most southerly wildlife reserve in Québec. The rich and diverse vegetation creates ideal conditions for wildlife observation and the reserve offers great spots for outdoor activities such as hunting and fishing.
