Personal Background
My personal background is one of family, travel, learning and working. I have a wonderful wife, Karen,who is incredibly supportive of me in my career, smart, and accomplished in her career as a Disaster Management Co-ordinator. Together, we have two incredibly bright, energetic and creative children, Gavin and Amelia (do I sound biased? Yes...but they are!).
Travel has been part of my life since I was a kid. Family vacations throughout Canada and the US with my parents in a stationwagon when I was a kid. I progressed to more extensive trips after graduation from high school. Sri Lanka was first with a six month program call Canada World Youth. Then it was nine months of travelling and living across Canada with another youth program called Katimavik. I have travelled to Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, Mexico, Venezuela on my own for various reasons. In fact, I've pinned 167 cities in 12 countries on the Trip Advisor application on Facebook!
Education has been very important as well. Since high school, I have received certificates in Telecommunications and Project Management from Red River College. I graduated first in my class at Divers Academy of the Eastern Starboard in New Jersey. In Scuba, I achieved the rating of Master Scuba Diver Trainer for PADI and held over 15 different Specialty Instructor ratings. At the moment of this writing, I am taking a course on mocassin construction through the City of Winnipeg.
Professional Background
My professional background has been varied, to say the least.
I have worked in many different capacities such as:
- Sales - Eaton's, Astral Photo, Don's Photo, Seventh Heaven Futon, Kinney Shoes.
- Construction: Tony's Home Renos, NJ, USA; Adeco Drilling, Edmonton, AB.
- Commercial Diver - Various companies in New Jersey, USA; Belsey Technical, ON; Dominion Divers, MB and as an independent contractor in Manitoba.
I have also worked at MTS Allstream as a Field Service Technician. Lineman, Equipment Installer, Control Center Technician and as a Project Manager.
As an owner of ONE STOP DIVING I was responsible for retail sales, accounting and staffing. I also arranged and escorted group trips for scuba diving to various locations throughout North America & Mexico. One of my biggest accomplishments was initiating a school program that allowed close to 500 high school students a year to discover scuba diving in a classroom and pool setting.
