Things to do (all within 5 minutes of your apartment):
Being located in the heart of Olympic Village certainly has its perks when it comes to activities. Here are a few ideas that are all within a 5 minute distance:
Science World: As one of Vancouver’s most iconic landmarks, Science World is a blast for the young and young at heart. With over 100 different exhibitions, the LARGEST dome OMNIMAX screen in the world (5 storeys high), and a new feature exhibition every few months (our favourite was Dinosaurs!) there really is something for everyone - 3 minute walk from your apartment (it’s the big silver circle/diamond in the pictures).
Seawall: Being a port city, we Vancouverites love our ocean! That’s probably why we have the world’s longest uninterrupted Seawall in the world - extending from the Vancouver Convention center all the way to Spanish Banks. What if I told you it was right outside your door here in Olympic village? It’s true! Our recommendation is to grab a few goodies from the ‘Urban Fair Grocery Store’ (right outside your apartment) and head to ‘Hinge Park’ (your own personal island connected to the seawall) to watch the boats and the sunset – ‘Urban Fair’ is a 30 second walk, and ‘Hinge Park’ is 5 minutes west on the Seawall.
Pub Crawl: Love craft breweries? There are three amazing options within two blocks of your apartment, and many more in the area. ‘CRAFT Beer Market’ is the big red barn right outside the door, ‘Tap & Barrel’ is the contemporary pub right on the water with some of the most scenic views in the city, and ‘Steel Toad Brewery’ is a very funky industrial spot where you can watch the beer being brewed while you drink it (they also have live music on Thursday and Fridays) – all three pubs are within 3 mins of your apartment.
Date Night: While ‘Hinge Park’ is a great option for a smooch, if you really want to romance your sweety you can’t really beat the following: step outside your door and onto the seawall – take a romantic stroll west on the Sewall to the famous ‘Granville Island’ – stop at the ‘Dockside Restaurant’ for a delicious bite and incredible views – grab tickets to the ‘Granville Island Theatre Sports Leagues’ to laugh your face off – and then take the ‘False Creek Ferry’ for a moonlight sail back to your front door in Olympic Village - and maybe back up to the rooftop hot tub or straight to bed ;)
Kayak – Want to get the real pacific experience? Rent a kayak from ‘Creekside Kayaks’, and explore Vancouver on the water. You can even bring a friend with the Tandem Kayak special (my advice is to sit in the back while your friend paddles, and you “steer” in the back). An awesome way to see the city up close, and a great workout too – 3 mins from your apartment.
Stanley Park – Have you heard of it? As Vancouver’s Jewel, Stanley Park is a green oasis in the midst of Vancouver’s urban landscape. With the ‘Vancouver Aquarium’, an impressive collection of First Nations Totem Poles, three gorgeous beaches, and over 1,000 acres of lush Pacific Rainforest to explore – Stanley Park is a must-see. Parking is a pain though, but guess what? You’re right on the Seawall that connects all the way to Stanley Park! So hop on the ‘False Creek Ferry’ to the ‘Yaletown Ferry Dock’, head to the ‘Reckless Bike Store’ to rent a bike, and ride all the way along the Seawall to ‘Stanley Park’. The best part is that you can actually ride around the whole Park! – 5 min ferry to Yaletown to grab the bikes
Rogers Arena/BC Place – Want to catch a football, soccer, rugby, hockey etc. game? Want to come see the hottest bands and acts perform? They are going to be at one of these two locations located right across the water from your apartment! One of my favourite live musical experiences was when I went to see Lionel Ritchie at Rogers Arena live (Hello! Is it me you’re looking for?) - 5 min ferry to Plaza of Nations
Not enough? Here are a few other fun things to check out in Vancouver – remember that you are 5 minutes away from the skytrain which will connect you to almost anywhere in the city:
•Visit Gastown – the oldest part of the city and has great local boutique shops, restaurants and bars (One skytrain stop away – 5 mins)
•Visit Chinatown – a very funky part of Vancouver. Lot’s of cool shops and great places to grab authentic Chinese Cuisine (One skytrain stop away - 5 mins)
•Museum of Anthropology - has an amazing collection of local aboriginal artifacts (the bus stop 59759 is right around the corner and will take you directly to UBC)
•Vancouver Art Gallery – new exhibits every few months to admire and reflect on. It has a great outdoor café too and is located in the heart of Downtown Vancouver – (3 skytrain stops way 8 mins)
• ‘Hop on Hop off’ tourist bus – great way to see the city – check out their website since they have multiple pick up and drop off spots
•Shop ‘Robson Street’ - This strip has all of your major American retailers. Shop till you Drop. If you are coming from the US, don’t forget about the Canadian Peso discount on everything you buy! - (3 skytrain stops away)
• ‘Harbour Centre’ Revolving Restaurant – enjoy fine dining at 553 feet while your 306 degree view continually changes as the restaurant actually revolves while you eat! (4 skytrain stops away)
•Edgewater Casino – want to win some big bucks so you can buy a place in Vancouver and stay here permanently? ‘Edgewater Casino’ is the place to do it – (5 min ferry or 15 min walk)
•Main Street – want to connect with your inner Hipster? Head to ‘Main Street’ during the day to check out the funky thrift shops and coffee places, and explore the live music at night. ‘The Fox Cabaret’ is always good for a stand up comedy night, 50’s sock hop, or french house dance party (10 min bus ride)
