Radio-frequency identification (RFID)

What is RFID?

Radio-frequency identification (RFID) is a technology that uses communication via electromagnetic waves to exchange data between a terminal and an electronic tag attached to an object, for the purpose of identification and tracking. Some tags can be read from several meters away and beyond the line of sight of the reader. The application of bulk reading enables an almost parallel reading of tags. Radio-frequency identification involves interrogators (also known as readers), and tags (also known as labels).

With ActiveWave's RFID solution, inventory can be updated in real time without product movement, scanning or human involvement. Fully automated system allows inventory status to be determined, and shipping & receiving documents to be generated automatically. The system could also trigger automatic orders for products that are low in inventory.

With the evolvement of this technology we are now starting to see RFID's becoming more mainstream at our local store purchases located on the label tags of an item and sometimes embedded on some of our major credit cards chip. Manufacturer and suppliers see the opportunity of using of this technology as a cost savings to eliminate the manpower and to streamline the complexity of their supply chain process. This can also be used to track down your purchases real-time and the movement of quantity. This data is substantial to manufacturer and supplier to replenish their shelves items in the store on time.

However, this technology can be a double edge sword. Just as this technology can be use as a cost savings and efficiency for a company by eliminating manpower needs, sophisticated thieves also sees the opportunity. With the use of a sophisticated tracking device it is now easier for them to steal your credit card information.

When shopping for holiday season keep in mind RFID and always safeguard and protect your identity!
