A Star to Guide You

A Star to Guide You

Ever wished there was an online community you could consult when shopping for a renovator? What if there were reviews of individuals and companies written by homeowners like you who had actually used their services?

Nancy Peterson dreamed of such a community while renovating her own home, then she went ahead and created it.

HomeStars is word-of-mouth re-imagined for the digital age. Started in Toronto, Homestars.com is still Ontario-based, but there are reviews on the site of businesses in 313 North American cities, from St. John's to Langley, from Albany to San Antonio, to Pensacola.

The site includes consumer reviews in hundreds of categories, from Alarm Systems to Woodworking.

The HomeStars staff works hard to validate every review that appears on its site, to make sure that the information you read is accurate and unbiased. Their goal is not to set up an adversarial relationship between consumers and contractors. Business owners are free to respond to reviews on the site, and the site also includes a forum where homeowners can get advice from each other and from renovators.
Each year, HomeStars rewards the best of the best with events in a number of cities.

There are some Montreal reviews on the site, but I wouldn't say we've reached critical mass yet. Why not go to homestars.com and have a look? Maybe you'll be moved to ask a question on the forum, or submit a review of a local business. At the moment, HomeStars only accepts reviews in English. But don't really terrible renovations, as well as really exceptional renovations, transcend language?
