Do You Like An Opened MLS (Multiple Listing Service) System?

Opening up the MLS (Multiple LIsting Service) System has been a hot issue between the Competition Bureau and Realtors. Many realtors believe that the private information like seller's name and phone number must be protected and the data relevant to a real estate transaction (sold prices, for example) should be distributed in a properly regulated environment. The Competition Commissioner Melanie Aitken demands to have all these information available online. She points out that if a real estate brokerage decides to make these information available on its website, it should not be restricted by the Toronto Real Estate Board so as to foster a level playing field between all the participants including the traditional real estate brokerages, discount brokerages and the general public. While there are many good arguments put forward by either side, I believe that the general public would ultimately like to have a system where they can benefit from and, at the same time, without jeopardizing their right to privacy. What do you think? Do you agree to opening up the MLS System so that everyone would have all the information about properties that have been listed for sale? Or do you prefer the current system where some of the information about a listed property available online and the rest to be distributed by a licenced realtor? It would be greatly appreciated if you can share your view on this topic so that as a Realtor, I should act and serve in line with the value of our most valuable partners, you!
