Uptown Waterloo is on the move again! The news is that there is a new condo development being considered for Uptown Waterloo at John St. E and King St S. The proposal includes the demolition of the buildings at 220, 222 and 226 King St. South and the building of a six story condominium with mixed commercial use on the main floor.
I attended the informal public meeting last night, January 14th and this is what I found out. The developer, KGR Holding, is asking to build 49 1 and 2 bedroom units, 32 underground parking spots, 17 outdoor parking spots and 3,000sq ft of commercial space. The present zoning for retail allows only office related products. The developer has asked that to be changed to allow a coffee shop, bakery, camera store or apparel store or a mix of the above. The thought is that a coffee shop would be great for the residents of the building and the surrounding neighbourhood.
The building from the rendition is in keeping with the other condo developments in the Uptown. They described it as having a 'strong visual impact'. The penthouses on the top story will be indented and there will be a parapet on the roof to enhance it's visual appearance. It has open balconies on the front and back of the building and a roof top terrace. Cars will be able to access the building from an entrance on King St. and on Dodd's Lane.
Councillor Melissa Durrell asked about the increase in traffic and available parking for the retail stores. Laura Dowell, replied that there will be a traffic study conducted.
There will be meetings coming up in the future to discuss the proposal. If you live within 120 meters of the proposed development you will be notified of these meetings. If you don't live within this area you can sign up for notifications by calling Rose Clemens at 519-747-8549 or email her at firstname.lastname@example.org
I will be attending these meetings and will write more for those of you who cannot attend.
