Amendments to the Assessment Act provide for a four-year assessment update cycle, beginning with the 2009 taxation year. Beginning in 2009 and continuing through 2012, property assessment values will be based on a January 1, 2008 valuation date (i.e., the full CVA of a property will reflect an estimated market value as at January 1, 2008).
The next assessment update will take place in 2012 for taxation years 2013-2016. Please look out for your notices, and if you feel that you have been unfairly assessed, call me so we may discuss it further, deadline to appeal is April 1st 2013.
Filing a RfR with MPAC is a mandatory first step in appealing assessment for properties in the residential, farm and managed forest property tax classes. Property owners who have assessment in these property tax classes wishing to dispute their assessment must first file a Request for Reconsideration with MPAC as a pre-condition to filing an appeal with the Assessment Review Board (ARB).
