A lot of people have small living rooms and they’re looking for ways to maximize the square footage. And if you are one of them, then this is for you.
We understand that space sells and if you don’t have much of it, you can always tweak and apply some things that will make it look bigger and brighter.
Here are some fresh and creative ideas that you can think about and hopefully give you some new designing ideas.
#1 Use built-ins
A lot of times this can be accomplished in multiple ways. One of the best ways is to have a box seat. In the picture shown above, you can see a seating area with a storage and book cases and it really works well not only for storage but also for display. It’s like hitting two birds with one stone.
This architectural technique makes your living space more functional and leverage the space that you have and it does allow you the wall space to use. You can also apply this to a breakfast nook to create plenty of seating space without creating an overcrowded room. This idea instantly transforms a room from plain to charming, don’t you think?
#2 Neutral wall paint
Paint plays a big part in creating a spacious looking room. Light and neutral colors create an illusion of a larger space. Whites and beiges are amazing for this. Stay away from dark and striking wall colors. Instead, to liven up your space, use pops colors whether it be your rug or accessories.
#3 Furniture with wheels
Another way of maximizing a space are pieces that have wheels. These can be functional furniture that can be moved around so if you need to open up the space to have a party or something like that, you can do so.
#4 Create a focal point
When people enter your living room, you don’t want them to instantly notice the size of your area. What you can do is to divert their attention to a single focal point. There are a lot of great ways to do this but the most inexpensive yet creative ones is to have decorative wall paper in one wall and plain paint on the others. This technique creates texture, color and adds depth.
Another tip is to design one wall with dominant pieces like huge decorative mirrors (also perfect for making a room look spacious) or any statement wall pieces that attracts attention.
#5 Use space under the stairs
A space that is often overlooked – area under the stair case. A great way to leverage the space underneath is to create a mini mud room. Here you can store things like boots, sweaters, gloves and scarves or anything you wish to store in there.
In the picture shown above you can see a refined storage installed with decorative doors with glass panes that looks really stylish. But ofcourse, you can always have something real simple like this one below.
