Kelowna Changes Bylaws for Legal Secondary Suites

The City of Kelowna has a ton of illegal basement suites.  Until recently, there hasn't been any simple process for home owners to go through who want to have a legal suite in a single family zoning.  The process used to involve a complicated rezoning with community input, a fair bit of stress, and no assurance that the suite would be permitted.  Recently (Sept. 2012), the City of Kelowna has adopted a new system of "legalizing" secondary suites which doesn't require a rezoning.  This means that all single family homes are now permitted to have a secondary suite.  In order for a suite to be "legal", the city still has to inspect the suite to make sure it's safe and meets all the City's requirements, but a major obstacle is now out of the way. Way to go City of Kelowna!  For all the details, visit:
