If the first three months are any indication 2014 will be booming for Kelowna's construction industry.

During his quarterly update to City Council Monday, deputy city manager, Paul Macklem, said construction values for the first three months of the year came in a $66M, 10 percent ahead of last year.

"This is a significant indicator in growing confidence in a local economy and the highest value first quarter since 2010," said Macklem.

"Sixty-five permits have been issued for new, single family dwellings which is also the highest number since 2010."

Macklem also stated 340 development applications were projected to be processed with 160 new lots approved.

"Major development applications moving in-stream include the Westcorp downtown hotel, the Conservatory site CD Zone update and the Capri Mall re-development."

Records also continue to fall at Kelowna International Airport.

"We just got news today that each of the first three months in 2014 were new records passenger months putting YLW almost seven per cent ahead of the same period last year."

Macklem says with 412,000 passengers already passing through the airport over the first three months, the city is a year ahead of its Drive To 1.6 Million Passengers which was targeted for 2015.

Kelowna International ended 2013 as the 10th busiest airport in Canada with just over 1.5 million passengers putting it about 50,000 passengers behind Victoria and slightly ahead of St. John's NL.
