Meet A REALTOR® - Dave Watson

When it comes to buying or selling a home, we understand the importance of getting to know your REALTOR® as more than just a professional. Our “Meet A REALTOR®” series introduces the hard-working people of the Century 21 Bachman & Associates, and provides a personal look at each of us as residents of our community. For this installment, we spoke with Dave Watson about what it means to live and work as a REALTOR® in Winnipeg & the surrounding area.

1.How long have you lived in Winnipeg?
I came to Winnipeg from Oxford, England in 1986 on holiday and emigrated in 1988.

2.Why did you choose to settle here?
I noticed that the lifestyle seemed to be better in Canada compared to Oxford. People seemed to be enjoying life and had a higher standard of living in Winnipeg.

3.What is your favourite thing about living in Winnipeg?
The people. It is true that sometimes you have to leave to appreciate it but Winnipeg is a very friendly city.

4.What makes Manitoba different than any other province to live?
Easy, the climate. We can go from +30 degrees in the summer to -30 degrees in the winter.

5.Tell us a few of your favourite activities to do or places to visit in the area?
I enjoy going to the many restaurants we have in the city, taking in a Jets game or going to the rink to watch my daughter play ringette. I also still enjoy playing soccer.

6.Tell us one thing you love about working in the real estate industry and why?
I enjoy the variety that each day brings. I used to be a factory machinist that meant going to the same place day after day and going at the same time each day. Working in real estate provides a variety of activity throughout the day and evening, both in the office and out. I love working and talking to people and I find it very interesting to learn about them and the opportunity of helping them make one of their biggest investment decisions of their life.

7.Describe one of your most memorable sales in real estate:
One of my most memorable sales was my sister’s home. We had looked at a home at 1pm and they were taking offers on the same day at approx. 7pm. My sister’s home was not yet listed for sale. She loved the home that we looked at but financially she did need to sell her home in order to afford the new one. At 4pm, she did not want to lose out on this home so she decided she would write an offer, subject to the sale of her home. In the meantime, I had spoken to an agent in my office who had been showing her clients homes in my sister’s area. The agent made an appointment to see the home at 5pm. At 5:30pm, she called to say her client was interested and wanted to write an offer. We accepted their offer subject to my sister’s offer being accepted on the new home, which it was. The beauty of our business is how we can network and make things happen.

8.How has technology helped you as a REALTOR?
Technology is a great tool, a huge timesaver and invaluable to a REALTOR. It also provides better service to clients. For example, when I first got my license 18 years ago I would call my clients about a new home that was listed in the area they were interested in. The listing would only have one exterior photo. My clients would then have to do a drive by to see the exterior, its location and the amenities available. If they were interested, they would call me and request an appointment to see the interior. Today, REALTORS can upload 20 pictures of a home, create a virtual tour and provide links to neighbourhood information, etc. This is especially beneficial to out of town buyers who have to rely on the internet for information about a home.

9.Describe one quality about yourself, which has helped you develop the necessary skills to be a successful REALTOR with Century 21 Bachman & Associates.
I like to think that I am a “people person”. I am very confident, comfortable and enjoy meeting new people. I am easy to talk to, regardless of their gender, personality and/or cultural background. I think that because of this quality, I continue to be referred to by family, friends and past clients, making up 85-90% of my business. I also like to make the experience fun. Obviously buying or selling a home is a serious and emotional time but I like to make my clients as comfortable as possible instead of adding stress. So, while we are out driving between appointments, I keep the conversation light and stress free.

10.Why Century 21 Bachman & Associates?

Although I am an independent contractor the manager and support staff are always available to me as questions arise.
