As outlined in the Integrated Leisure Master Plan (ILMP), Council approved the construction of a new 121,000-square-foot Community Centre and Library, and park, which will be located on 13.6 acres of land at the southeast corner of 14th Avenue and Middlefield Road. This site was chosen because of its easy access to pedestrian-friendly public transit, an accessible road network, and close proximity to two high schools and residential neighbourhoods.
Following six months of community consultation on the concept and features of the new facility, it has been determined that a library, triple gymnasia with a running/walking track, and swimming pool, along with active living spaces, a teaching kitchen and multi-use community rooms, and cultural spaces will all be part of this new community centre and library. These program areas were presented to community members at an information session in early September that included round table discussions to facilitate gathering additional comments and ideas from Markham residents.
The community centre and library, and park are sized to meet future needs. In addition to the building, parking and piazza area, five acres of the site will be used for a new community park.
