The reconstruction of Main Street Markham from Highway 407 to Major Mackenzie Drive is a key strategic priority for Markham. In addition to the reconstruction of the road, the project will:
- Permit much-needed upgrades to Main Street Markham's water main, storm sewers and associated service connections,
- Enhance the existing streetscape,
- Improve the public realm, and
- Showcases this significant residential, commercial and heritage community of Markham.
Current Status of Construction
Reconstruction of Main Street Markham, between Highway 7 and Bullock Drive began in July, 2013.
Work progress as of September 16, 2013 on the east side of Main Street Markham (Hwy. 7 to Bullock Drive):
- Curb removal and replacement (100% complete)
- Streetlight installation (70% complete)
- Tree pit installation (50% complete)
- Sidewalk removal and replacement (75% complete)
- Boulevard Brick paver installation (starting this week)
The east boulevard works are anticipated to be completed by mid-October.
The west boulevard work is scheduled to commence in mid-October, 2013 and is anticipated to be substantially completed (i.e. curbs, streetlights, sidewalk, interlocking, etc.) by the end of November, 2013.
It is anticipated that construction will not be completed by November 28, 2013 and the remaining work will be deferred until spring 2014 so that the Holiday Shopping Season in December is not disrupted.

Why are we doing this?
The community wishes to transform Main Street Markham from a vehicular dominated street to one that better supports commercial activities in the core and enhances the Markham Village Heritage Conservation District. On a Markham-wide scale, the project will allow planning for the overall transportation network up to year 2021 and provide a framework for growth management.
How do I get to and from Main Street Markham?
Although reconstruction of this nature and magnitude will cause some disruption during actual construction, the project will be phased so that only sections of Main Street Markham will be affected at one time, while the remainder of the street remains in operation.
Who is paying for this?
The City of Markham will be investing $5,525,200 into the project, to be phased financially over time.
