Barrie's Historic Neighbourhood Strategy

Back in 2009 The City of Barrie launched a Name your Neighbourhood campaign to promote historic community signage and preservation.

Over the past few years you may have noticed some new street signs popping up.  Do you know the name of your historic neighbourhood?

They are:

The Grove   West Village
Queen’s Park   Brock Park
Downtown   Allandale

" In the heart of Barrie, the historic

neighbourhoods are thriving communities

which are clean, green, attractive, diverse and

accessible, where people are connected and

well serviced with facilities and amenities.

These neighbourhoods offer residents a

distinctive sense of place and character, which

evokes a sense of pride in those who call

these places home."

City of Barrie HNS Plan

Historic buildings of interest include:

The Queens Hotel                               The Jail

Prince of Wales School

What's the next step?  The City of Barrie has a long term action plan that would continue the process of improving and preserving our historic city.

Including:

Architectural Design Standards: implement enforceable

architectural design standards

Plaques: implement program and ensure regular maintenance

and replacement as required

Urban Design Standards: ongoing monitoring, review

and updating as required

Public Art: initiate implementation of public art program

For more information on the Historic Neighbourhood Strategy you can visit the City of Barrie.  The HNS plans to continue until 2021.
