Pet Proofing Your Home & Furniture Barrie

We sure do love our pets unconditionally.  And our pets love our furniture!  Here are some tips to pet proof your furniture and avoid the "wear and tear", literally!

1. Use Slip Covers.

The easiest and most inexpensive way to protect your furniture from shedding, leaks, scratching etc.  You can also use a throw blanket, or sheets.  These are easy to wash in the laundry and won't cost a lot.

Be sure to brush and de-shed your pet often.  Keep nails trimmed.  This will also help reduce the wear on furniture.

Keep paws clean.  Have an area to wipe down paws when pets come indoors.  This will keep your floors and furniture cleaner.

2.  Give Chew Toys

Pets like to chew, especially if teething.  Baseboards, wooden chair legs can take a beating.  Supplying your pet with appropriate chew toys is key.  Additionally you can spray the wood areas with vinegar to repel your pet from that area.  Cats hate the smell of lemon and rosemary, so you can use these essential oils in your spray.

3.  Have Scratch areas.

Yes cats love to scratch things.  That also means your leather sofa!  Including scratch areas and toys for your cat will help keep him occupied.  Microfiber is only surface cats will not scratch.  You can use a microfiber cover for your good furniture and this should keep them safe.

4. Deodorizing

The smell of pet urine is difficult to mask.  It lingers, it's offensive to visitors.  How to get rid of that smell for good?  Baking soda. Stock up on baking soda.  It is inexpensive and works effectively to remove odors and freshen the home.

Sprinkle baking soda on your carpet and fabric furniture.  Let sit for a few minutes, then vacuum.

Alternately you can leave baking soda in a bowl and add a few drops of your favourite essential oils to work as a natural home deodorizer.  Your home will smell fresh and clean.

As soon as your pet has an accident it is important to remove immediately.

You can sprinkle the baking soda on the wet area and let it absorb into the powder.  Then wipe up or vacuum away.
