Springtime at Last!

Happy Spring everyone!

We had a chance to do a bit of yard work this past weekend and if this rain stops, it will be time to cut the lawn this weekend!

If you are not receiving my newsletter in your mailbox, here is a sample of some spring tidy tips - enjoy!

Your Summer Oasis is Within Reach

Creating an outdoor space can be a great extension to your home. Whether you’re dealing with an acre of green or a small balcony, you’ll be able to make an ideal spot for entertaining or to just enjoy the summer sun.

Create your own summer oasis with a few easy tips.

Have a Focal Point

Having a focal point in a room or outdoor space controls where the eye is drawn to first. This could come in the shape of an architectural piece like an outdoor fireplace or a nice coffee table. It could also be a piece of art or a plant if you so choose. The point is to create a visual weight in which to arrange the rest of your furniture to create balance. When displaying a few objects, make sure they are in keeping with the overall style of a space.

Choose Your Furniture Wisely

It’s a good idea to measure your outdoor space to ensure you buy the right furniture. Your patio furniture should be consistent with your interior decor to create a seamless look indoors and out. Select pieces that not only are durable but also have comfort and character.

Include a Personal Touch

As you would for inside your home, reflect your personality in your decorating. Accessories like outdoor pillows or cushions can brighten up your outdoor space and reflect your personal taste. There is a vast array of weather-resistance fabrics to choose from and in all colours and prints.

When entertaining, don’t be afraid to bring some of your home decor pieces like a silver serving tray or an ice bucket outdoors.

Add Plants

Live plants freshen up any balcony, porch or backyard. Buy plants suited to your outdoor lighting conditions. You can pot your own long-lasting geraniums, pansies, ivy, begonias or save time by buying planter-ready potted arrangements and dropping them into ornamental planters.

Keep Your Furniture Clean

Take care of your pieces now so you’ll enjoy them for years. If you make sure you maintain the furniture it will last much longer.

Regardless of the type of outdoor furniture you have, some guidelines apply:

Start with water and a mild dishwashing detergent. The gentle mixture won’t scratch or bleach. Always test any specialty products in an inconspicuous place first. Be sure to avoid using a power washer as it can strip paint or coating off your furniture.

Cover up with breathable fabric furniture covers (Although waterproof, vinyl doesn’t breathe, so it can trap moisture, leading to mould). While covers aren’t an absolute necessity, they can extend the life of your patio set. Use them over the winter in particular, if you can’t store your pieces indoors.

Enjoy the rest of your summer!
