The city of Humboldt is hosting the Saskatchewan Senior Fitness Association 55 Plus Provincial games which runs for three days beginning on Tuesday and concluding with the Closing Ceremonies on Thursday at 1.
There are 700 competitors taking part in 18 events including: track and field, bowling, whist, pickle ball - yes pickle ball (go on line to check it out!), bocce, slow pitch and more.
Approximately 150 volunteers signed up to make this a smooth running event. Humboldt hosted this event about 10 years ago. At the time I volunteered to help out in the track and field events. The activity I enjoyed the most was the one mile wlak/jog/run. What made it so interesting was that each contestant had to indicate the time they thought it would take to complete the distance and they could not use a watch. They had to keep track in their head regarding the pace they must maintain to complete it in the time they had given. This made it a definite "level playing field" as no matter what the age or degree of physical conditioning, it was in the mind.
The Saskatchewan Senior Fitness Association is non government, volunteer association. Go to www.ssfa.ca to learn more about the organization and to see the schedule of events and times.
Best of luck to all contestants and thanks to all the volunteers who are making this possible.
PS Humboldt is "bringing the weather" this week just for the Games.
