The Annual Christmas Dinner was started by three local families in 1983, simply because there were not any restaurants open on Christmas Day in Drumheller. It has now become a place to enjoy Christmas dinner in the company of others.
"There are myriad reasons that our guests attend this dinner on Christmas," explained C21 Salesperson Gary Chambers. "Maybe you decide not to cook because you do not have guests coming, or maybe you are too busy to cook a formal dinner, or possibly your family lives out of town and are unable to join you this year. Regardless of the reason, we enjoy the company of all of the people who are able to join us."
When asked how you get invited to the dinner, Bob Sheddy laughed and said "Everyone is welcome at the Annual Santa's Christmas Dinner, and the only prerequisite is having the Christmas Spirit." In fact, some families have made it a tradition to bring their family to the dinner year after year.
The event was held for many years at the local Elks Club, Drumheller Inn, and Stavros, Drumheller Boston Pizza, and now O'Sheas is the venue. Chris and Heather Jones (who operate both The Boston Pizza and O'Sheas) have acted in a generous manner allowing their restaurants to be the site of the event for the last few years.
Last year a fire at Boston Pizza led to a change in venue to O'Shea's Restaurant. This became the start of new tradition, and this year the dinner wll be held at O'Shea's.
"We're honoured to have the dinner at O'Shea's this year," commented Cam Christianson, of Canalta. "It's a great group of people to spend Christmas with."
The meal includes a homemade turkey dinner with all the fixings, coffee, pie, dessert, chocolates and great company.
The organizers will also have a shuttle running for those who need a ride to the event. They will also deliver care packages to your home for those who can't make it out.
