Christmas on a budget

Christmas on a budget? We’ve got great suggestions to help put some hard earned money back into your pocket!

Whether you live in Airdrie, Strathmore or downtown Calgary, we recognize that decorating your home for the holidays can be expensive – especially if you’ve recently purchased one!

Purchasing a Christmas tree can be costly depending on where you go in the city. Perhaps it’s time to start a new tradition in your home! For under $6.00 you can purchase a permit to cut down your very own Christmas tree on Crown land. You can cut down up to 3 trees so long as they do not individually exceed 2.5m (about 8ft). This great family exercise will allow you to put some hard earned money back into your holiday budget and explore some of Alberta’s scenic countryside. Some additional rules and restrictions apply. Entertaining guests? Pre-arranged flower arrangements are sold at a premium during the holiday season. Save some cutouts from pruning your tree and create your own centerpieces. Use pinecones, Christmas bulbs and cut flowers to create a beautiful, unique centrepiece for a fraction of the cost.

Instead of purchasing cookie baskets, make your own. Gather some of your favourite recipes and festive tins from the dollar store to create Christmas cookie bundles that will be raved about! If you don't yet have a large repertoire of recipes at arms reach - try allrecipes.com. Homemade always trumps store bought!
