Hamilton is a Canadian port city located on the western side of Lake Ontario. This warm and welcoming city is home to a booming population of 569,000 people. It was incorporated in 1846 and was named after its founder George Hamilton.

Hamilton is just 45 km from Toronto and about the same distance to the shores of another Great Lake—Lake Erie. Also known as Steel City, Hamilton produces 60% of the steel in Canada. Large steel companies Stelco and Dofasco have their headquarters in Hamilton. The Dofasco plant alone employs 7,300 people, making it one of the city’s largest employers.

One of the most amazing buildings in the city is Dundurn Castle. It was built in 1835 and has been restored to look like it did in 1855 when it was the home of Sir Allan MacNab. The city bought the property in 1900 and now offers tours of the property.

Getting Around in Hamilton

However, there are some great public transportation options available, too. Hamilton Street Railway operates the bus system, and a light rail train line is coming to the city.
