The total value of building permits for the first eight months of 2013 is down from the same period last year. Construction activity last year was more hotels, industrial and government sectors. However, residential construction to date is still ahead of last year.
Housing construction remained strong from the start of January to the end of August, with 1,315 multi-family units being built versus 890 for the same eight-month period in 2012.
The value of the housing-related projects to date in 2013 including single-family homes, duplexes, semi-detached dwellings, multi-attached housing units and apartments is $274 million, compared to $252 million in the same period last year.
Mayor Michael Fougere says "This shows positive momentum for our city and our economy. It's always great to see more housing begin to take shape, but we still need to do more to improve vacancy rates in Regina".
New permits issued in August for projects over $1 million include:
- Student residences at the University of Regina
- Two new apartments at 1251 and 1252 N Galloway Street
- Group dwellings at 1225 Empress Street
- New office building at 1550-14th Avenue
