Stayner band is running for reality TV show

STAYNER - A local band is looking for help in getting on a national reality television show.

Fire and Sound is one of six music groups vying for the final slot on MuchMusic’s Discovered reality show. Formerly known as disBAND, the show puts aspiring musicians up against a panel of industry judges to see if they have what it takes to get signed by a record label.

Fire and Sound has been pursuing music as a career since the members finished high school, but the three-piece pop-rock group has been together a lot longer than that, said Tyler Chapman, the band’s lead singer and guitarist. When they were in Grade 8, Chapman, bass player Colin Scott and drummer Mickey Nikolopoulos decided to play a few songs for the Clearview Meadows Elementary School talent show. Afterward, they decided to continue playing together. It wasn’t until high school was over that the band started making inroads into Ontario’s music scene though.

“We started playing a lot of shows down in Toronto, and you just start meeting people,” said Chapman.

As they played more concerts, Fire and Sound began making contacts in the music industry. One of the people they met was a record label representative and a judge on disBAND. He helped get Fire and Sound into the running for the MuchMusic Discovered program. Competition was stiff, with about 500 bands from across Canada vying for one of eight spots on the show. Chapman said they received a call from MuchMusic telling them they had been narrowed down to the last 50 candidates. They were called into the studio for an interview and extended selection process, Chapman said.

With seven of the spots on the show already taken, the band is now counting on the public to secure the final spot. MuchMusic is using online voting to determine who the last band will be.

Chapman said people can vote once a week, and he is encouraging people to vote for his band as often as they can.

To vote, go to www.muchmusic.com/hp. Find the Fire and Sound section, and click “more”. A link to vote is at the bottom of the page. You will need to register for the website to vote.

Voters will also qualify for the chance to win prizes.

The final day of voting is Oct. 31.
