Why Is Snacking So Healthy?

February is heart health month. The Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada promotes heart healthy education in the month of February to help remind and educate people and their families to eat well.

According to The Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada health experts recommend eating three small meals a day plus a few nutritious snacks. This is important for adults and children, and part of a healthy and balanced diet.

Not only is snacking a great way to help you to feel energized during a busy day, manage your hunger and prevent you from overeating, but it will help to give your body the nutrients that it needs to stay healthy and protect against heart disease, stroke and diabetes.

Healthy snacks have fibre. Fibre helps you to feel full and helps you to resist unhealthy higher calorie snack choices.

Looking for fibre? Try:

Plain low-fat popcorn or whole grain cereal

Healthy snacks have carbohydrates. Carbohydrates give you quick energy.

Looking for carbohydrates? Try:

Whole wheat crackers, vegetables or fruit

Healthy snacks have protein. Protein will provide you with sustained energy.

Looking for protein? Try:

Low fat cheese, roasted soybeans and unsalted nuts

And remember snacks are meant to be small. Snack sizes should be just enough so that you won’t feel hungry before your next meal.
