7 easy tips to help prevent water damage in your home.

  1. Invest in braided hoses: This is one of the most important things you can do to prevent water damage. Take a look at the hoses that attach to your washing machine, fridge icemaker, dishwasher & toilets. If they are plastic, they may harden over time & burst. Braided stainless steel hoses will remain flexible and provide you with maximum security.
  2. Check your appliances periodically for signs of leakage: it may be possible to avoid an expensive repair {and a nasty experience with flooding} by checking for any noticeable leaks around your dishwasher, fridge, washing machine etc. Take action before a small problem becomes a big issue!
  3. Re-caulk and reseal bathtub surrounds: On an annual basis, you should check the caulking around your bathtub. Also keep an eye out for cracked or deteriorating tile grout.
  4. Replace potentially faulty “Crane” toilets: if you live in a home built before 1992 check your Crane toilet. Lift the tank lid and look for the eight digit serial number stamped into the tank. If it starts with a “v” and the 3rd & 4th between 80 and 90, consider replacing your toilet.
  5. Use plastic bins to store important documents: When you store things that are important to you {photos, mementoes, tax records, bank statements etc.} put them in heavy duty, waterproof plastic bins.
  6. Get your electronics of the floor: If you have a desktop computer, make sure it is not sitting on the floor. A stand that raises your electronics 5 to 10 cm off the ground will protect them from most water damage.
  7. Don’t touch the sprinkler heads: if your home is equipped with sprinkler heads never hang anything from them and don’t hold onto them when cleaning your ceiling. If a sprinkler head snaps off, you could be looking at serious water damage to your home. If you live in an apartment, you could also cause damage to the floors below!
