Media Release July 13, 2010:
Our community (NOTL) has shown support for “Friends of NDSS” in the past and we have greatly appreciated it. It has encouraged us as a group to continue to battle for secondary education in our rural community and has funded the numerous and highly informative “Freedom of Information” requests from the District School Board of Niagara (DSBN). This information along with countless hours of research has confirmed many unaccountable and unacceptable actions by the DSBN which has led to the closure of Niagara-on-the-Lake’s only secondary school. The many efforts and requests made by Friends and the Town of NOTL for meaningful dialogue, both with the school board as well as the Ministry of Education, has yet to result in a respectful and open discussion of the dilemma that NOTL faces without secondary school education in its future.
Regrettably, we as Friends find this extremely undemocratic and unacceptable and as a result we have obtained the legal counsel of a Toronto firm. After extensive review of the information gathered over the past three years, our lawyer has submitted a request for a judicial review to the Superior Court of Justice – Divisional Court.
- · Notice of this application for a judicial review was served to the DSBN on June 14, 2010.
- · Our affidavit was served July 9, 2010.
We strongly believe that we all have a vested interest in this cause, whether you are a tax paying property owner with or without children, or a business owner in a rural community. As we have said before, we will pursue all avenues available including legal and political to bring accountability to the educational system.
We realize that this is a “David vs Goliath” fight, but let’s remember who won that battle.
