CENTURY 21 City Realty Inc. › Merritton
Merritton is a community and council ward of St. Catharines where residents maintain a sense of distinct community identity. Merritton is often referred to as 'The Heart of St. Catharines' in part to the location. Merritton amalgamated in 1960 with St. Catharines along with former Grantham and Port Dalhousie.
There are community organizations in Merritton as well, including the Merritton Lions who oversee the Labour Day parade (now known as the Community Days Parade), the Dunc Schooley Memorial Pool, and other sports and recreation facilities. There is also the Merritton Athletic Association, Merritton Figure Skating Club and the home of one of St. Catharines arenas and community centres.
Merritton is a former industrial center on the Welland Canal and Merritton has a number of heritage sites. The Keg restaurant is housed in the former Independent Rubber Company and Johnny Roccos in the former Domtar building showing the significant increase in brownfield development.
It is largely a family community with both public and separate schools, close proximity to shopping, downtown core, local Brock University and Niagara College.
