InSeason Farmers' Market is opening on June 6 at at Art's Nursery, at 8940 192 St., Surrey. A farmers market is most beneficial to those great enablers in a healthy community, home cooks. Picking fresh goods from charming tents outside at a farmers market makes the shopping part of the job healthy and fun.
Market organizers Anita LaRoche and Evelyne Mikusch aim to have 35 vendors at the garden centre every Thursday, from 2 to 7 p.m., during the summer season.
In April, they ran into zoning and construction issues with their original market location in Port Kells, and scrambled to find another site in the area.
A website (http://inseasonfarmersmarket.com/) details their goal of a market brimming with locally produced food, art and other goods, plus space for community groups and live entertainment.
Building a vibrant local food movement takes commitment, LaRoche and Mikusch say on the website.
InSeason is grateful to the dedicated people in the community who have worked to make this happen. As a non-profit member of the BC Association of Farmers’ Markets, InSeason is here to make Thursday “Fresh Day”. Shoppers can expect to find a whole load of incredible baking, organic chicken, gourmet sauces, the Valley’s best cheese maker, Surrey honey, traditional canned fruit, jams and jellies, specialty vinegars and so much more.
"Like any farmers' market, the idea continues to gain momentum because people want to eat local, nutritious and ethically sourced food," LaRoche said. "Money spent at a farmers' market stays in the community."
