TransLink is considering its options for the replacement of the troubled Pattullo Bridge. Experts say the ageing span has seen many head-on collisions and is unlikely to withstand a moderate earthquake or ship collision.
A joint partnership has been set up between the City of New Westminster, the City of Surrey and TransLink. Twenty-five different options have been proposed–six of which are being looked at seriously. Among the options: replacing the Pattullo at the existing site with a bridge of up to six lanes or digging a tunnel under the river. Another proposal includes building a brand new Surrey-Coquitlam bridge, located between the present Pattullo and Port Mann Bridges. Replacing the 75-year-old bridge would be expensive and while no final decision has been made when it comes to funding, a toll has not been ruled out.
