What do you buy for the man who thinks his closet has everything?

Father’s Day shopping season is upon us, and though there are plenty of dapper dads out there, your gift may be a much-needed style upgrade for a gent who’s been happily rocking the same pair of Dockers for the last 15 years.

Fear not: Looking great doesn’t have to be complicated. “Less is more when pulling together an outfit,” advises Vancouver-based stylist Nadia Albano. “Keep your style clean and simple.”

A wardrobe of unfussy, mix-and-match basic items is all a guy needs to look good -- but if those same threads are going to go with you from the office to weekends and back again, it’s crucial to choose them with care.

What makes a great basic? Michael Preysman, the co-founder of Everlane, says it hinges on three things: Hard-wearing fabric, solid workmanship, and a great, flattering cut.
