Surrey is a multicultural city situated in the British Columbia, Canada. It was declared as Municipality in 1879. It also achieved a city status in 1993. Surrey is a member of Metro Vancouver. It is called a city of parks. It is now in the second position according to the density of population. The density of the population is 1,500/km2. The mayor of this city is Dianne Watts. Total area of this city is about 316.41 km2. Total population of this city is 468,251. The highest elevation of this city is 134 meters. The city of Surrey is combination of six town centers. These are South Surrey,Fleetwood, Newton, Cloverdale, Guildford and Whalley. It was incorporated in 1879. A group of Halqemeylem-speaking people were occupied this place. It was filled up with wild forests. There were various types of trees in this area. Among them hemlock, blackberry bushes, douglas-fir, fir, cranberry bogs and red cedar are famous. Whalley's Corner was used as a burial place for the people of the Kwantlen Nation. The Peace Arch is situated in Surrey. Most of the settlers came to Cloverdale and South Surrey at the initial level. They were directly involved with farming, fishing and harvesting. Some of them had small shops for retail business. People from different part of the world came to Surrey for living and doing business in the 1980s to 1990s. Most of them came from Asia and Africa. According to the survey, Surrey will be the most populous city by 2030. It will exceed number of the limit of the population of Vancouver.
The Government of Surrey has eight members for city council. The present mayor Dianne Watts was elected in 2011 and is currently serving in the possition.
There are 100 public elementary and 21 public secondary schools in this city. Surrey has the largest public school district in BC. Among them Holy Cross Regional High School, Pacific Academy, White Rock Christian Academy, Surrey Christian School, Regent Christian Academy and South ridge School are famous. About 65,000 students are enrolled with these schools. There is a third campus of Simon Fraser University in Surrey. It was inaugurated in 2002. This campus offers many attractive subjects like Criminology, applied sciences, world literature, Business administration and modern technology. Kwantlen Polytechnic University was opened in 1981. It has a satellite campus in Richmond, Vancouver. The surrey campus of Kwantlen Polytechnic University offers business administration, applied sciences, health and arts for students.
There are many attractive parks in Surrey. There are about 200 parks in this city. Among them, Blackie Spit Park andBear Creek Park are famous. There are running tracks, nature trails, beautiful gardens with rare species of plants and soccer fields. Many students and tourists visit these parks in every year to explore a new adventure of nature.
