Smoke Detector Safety

It is so easy to get wrapped up in daily tasks in today’s age with the fast paced lifestyles we tend to lead. It becomes very easy to forget about simple chores around your home such as watering your plants or checking the smoke alarms. This blog is a simple reminder of how, when, and why it is so important to continually check your smoke detectors to ensure they are working properly.

Many people forget about these very important devices we all have in our homes to protect us against life threating house fires. Ensuring that you have working smoke alarms on every storey and outside all sleeping areas in your home is crucial to fire safety. Fire Marshals and Chairs recommend that to check your smoke detector every month by a simple press of a button. This button is normally labelled “test button” and is located in the center of your detector. Although Batteries can typically last for a year it is hard to determine an exact life expectancy of the product.

Some tips to ensure you are following proper fire safety and always have a working smoke detector include:

  • Replacing smoke alarms with new ones maximum every 10 years
  • Replacing batteries once a year
  • Testing your smoke alarm every month by pressing the “test button”
  • Ensuring a working smoke detector is on every storey and outside all sleeping areas of your home
