Groundhog Day 2011: Furry Forecasters Call For Early Spring

Wiarton Willie and Nova Scotia's Shubenacadie Sam are both predicting an early spring.

The two furry forecasters failed to see their shadows on Groundhog Day Wednesday morning.

Amid a snowstorm that hit Ontario, officials said it was no surprise that Wiarton Willie did not see his shadow. However, as broadcast live on Citytv and, for the first time ever, the annual Wiarton Willie Festival was moved indoors due to the weather.

After predicting an early Spring, one organizer joked Willie was so happy he immediately booked an early tee time on the golf course.

Meanwhile, a severe winter storm was also pounding Eastern Canada.

Sam emerged into a special enclosure to the sound of bagpipes and the shouts of school children who had come to watch the event.

Pennsylvania's Punxsutawney Phil followed Sam's and Willie's prognostications.
