What is one major milestone in any young couples’ life? After crossing into the threshold of marriage, it's crossing the threshold of your first home!
It is where you and your significant other are going to begin creating a life together. It is the home you will make meals together, the space you will decorate with all your favorite colors and pictures, the property you will have your first house party at, celebrating this grand new adventure in life with family, friends, and new neighbours! It will become a place that will not only house your bodies, but the memories that kick start your new life together!
Maybe it won’t be the last place you live, but it will be a very important one. As such, you’ll want to make sure you find the best possible property in order to start everything off on a good foot!
So, what should you be looking for in a neighborhood and home as part of a young couple? Here are five tips to aid you in your search for a fantastic property!
1). Nice Neighbours: After visiting a property with your real estate agent, knock on the neighbors doors and talk to them for a bit! Ask them about the community, what they think of the area, if there are other young couples in the vicinity, etc. As long as they’re game, it’s a wonderful way to get to know the people who could potentially become your neighbors (and to find out if they are nice)!
2). Solid Property: Find a home that requires minimal immediate maintenance. While all homes require upkeep, you don’t want your first to be a total fixer-upper. A property that requires tons of maintenance will become very expensive very fast, and won’t be a reliable place. If you want to start out on a good foot, find something solid that you won’t constantly be fixing!
3). Personality Perfect: Most areas seem to cater to one culture more than others, whether intentionally or not. Whether it be artsy, intellectual, religious, hipster, classic, etc., find a neighbourhood culture that best suits you and your partner! If you enjoy live music and art galleries, find a neighborhood near venues for these things and you will likely find people who are just as attracted to them as you are! This will not only provide you with an area that feels your personality, but will help you make friends!
4). Get Involved: One of the most daunting things about moving away on your own to start a life with your partner is feeling isolated from family and friends, especially when you don’t know anyone in the area. So, find an area that provides lots of ways for you to get plugged in! Whether it be through church, a club, or a community volunteer group, find ways to get involved in your community with people from your community!
5). Love At First Sight: Find a property you love. Don’t settle. Move somewhere that gets you excited! A place you can grow in, grow together in, and make lots of memories! Your real estate agent will help you find the perfect home for YOU, so keep an open mind and find a place you really love!
