Tips for Building a Great Deck this Summer

Installing a deck is a great way to add extra square footage to your home - and can increase your living space considerably when you add a dining space or lounge. Not all decks need to be boring – considering adding extra details such as built-in benches or lighting, which not only look good but make it stand out when you plan to re-sell your house!

Consider Low Maintenance Materials

Composites (like Trex), PVC, and Aluminum materials have become very popular deck materials for a number of reasons. Composite decking offers the beauty of wood without the drawbacks of potential corroding, splintering or termite damage. This low-maintenance decking alternative holds up to the temperature extremes of Canadian weather.

Deck Lighting

Low voltage lights are a cost effective way to add some style to your deck. String lights also offer versatility and they can go up in any location, plus there’s no need to conceal wiring as its part of the lights!

Railings provide the perfect opportunity to add a punch of style to a deck. You can find a variety of materials, colours, and designs to complement your exterior style.

Wrought-iron railings provide an artistic and rustic touch, while glass panels allow for a virtually unobstructed view of the backyard.

Benches, Planters and Pergolas

Consider including a bench, planter or a pergola into you deck. These types of features not only add visual appeal, but adding a pergola can also increase privacy and shade. Pergolas help define separate spaces, and are easy to enhance with hanging baskets, light fixtures or trellis. Even though trellis doesn’t completely block the view beyond, it provides enough protection to make the deck more enjoyable.

Don’t Forget about the Space Under you Deck

Whether you have a lot or a little space under your deck doesn’t matter – be sure to make use of whatever available space you have either for storage or extra space you can enjoy with friends and family. Depending on height you may be able to fit an entire living space under your deck that’s secluded and already comes with tons of shade.

Anything lower to the ground may provide the perfect opportunity for storage for items such a gardening tools or even your lawn mower! Make sure if you have expensive tools to full fence-in the perimeter and include a door and lock – and to help keep out any unwanted pests!
