Energy-Saving Tips for Winter
Set thermostat to 68°F (20°C). Every degree lower in the 60° to 70° range saves up to 5% on heating costs. Wear warm clothing and set thermostat to 68° or lower during the day and evening, health permitting. Set thermostat to 55° (13°C) or off at night or when leaving home for a long time, saving 5 to 20% of costs (heat pumps should only be set back 2° [1°C] to prevent unneeded use of backup strip heating).
Replace or clean furnace filters monthly. Dirty filters restrict airflow and increase energy use. Keeping your furnace clean, lubricated and properly adjusted will reduce energy use up to 5%.
Reduce hot water temperature. Use 120°F (49°C), unless your dishwasher requires a higher setting. Savings are 7 to 11% of water heating costs. Insulate the first 5 feet of pipe coming out of the top of your water heater.
