If you are considering making the move East of Toronto, Oshawa may be the place for you. The Oshawa Center announced in early 2013 that it will be introducing a $230-million redevelopment plan beginning summer 2013. The Oshawa Center is a shopping destination that has been an essential part of the Durham Region for over 50 years. We have seen improvements throughout the years since opening including expansions in size and store numbers. Even though the Oshawa center has undergone many renovations in recent years, large city center malls such as Yorkdale and Toronto Eaton Center have captured the attention of communities in the GTA, because of the wide variety of stores available as a one stop shop destination.
The redevelopment details include:
• Over 60 new retail concepts, including two additional large format retailers
• New 1,000-seat, sophisticated food court
• New main entrances on the east side
• New and updated entrances on the west side
• Upgraded seating area elements, including floor and ceiling treatment
• Fully renovated washrooms with modern upgraded finishes
This makeover will bring expansion development into many areas of Oshawa and the Durham Region. Bill Thompson, General Manager, Oshawa Center said “It offers great regional economic news but also reinforces our dominant position in the fastest growing community in the GTA” during a press conference regarding expansion efforts. All these changes will help bring cultures together for a more diverse community. New housing developments, roadways, and jobs will change Oshawa’s reputation of being grungy and “dirty” to clean and sophisticated, and making your move to the Durham Region closer to “home”.
