Increased GO Service to Benefit Commuters and Business in Durham

Commuting to and from work on GO Transit can be a hassle, missing a train and having to wait for the next one can take a long time because of the gap in train times throughout the week and weekends. GO Transit riders can celebrate the fact that GO Transit will begin increasing its train service along the busy Lakeshore East and Lakeshore West lines to every 30 minutes, seven days a week on June 29th of this year.

“This is something we have been asking for for quite some time.” Said the Pickering Mayor Dave Ryan. The increased service will see 263 new train trips in total, 19 new trips on weekdays, 24 new trips on Saturdays and 15 new trips on Sundays on the Lakeshore East line which runs through Durham to Scarborough to Toronto’s Union Station.

MPP Joe Dickson commended the new service stating that GO transit moves 65 million people a year on its trains and buses and has invested more than $300 million in GO service in Durham.

Joe Dickson said, “This is all part of the Government of Ontario’s plan to lessen congestion, strengthen the economy and create jobs.” He also noted the work being done on area roads including Hwy. 407 East extension, Hwy. 7 widening, Hwy. 401 link and Bayly will also help to alleviate traffic in the region.

According to Bill Jenkins, director of station services for GO, the capacity of one train is 1,600 people, and is estimated to be comparable to about one lane of traffic.

“When you look at one train equalling one lane of traffic, that’s a pretty impressive amount of infrastructure it’s replacing,” Mr. Jenkins said.

This increased service will make life easier for GO transit commuters and free up traffic on highways. If you’re wondering where your next move should be, it should be within the Durham Region. You’re close to the city without the high housing prices and busy traffic and only a convenient train ride away.
