This weekend is the Taste of Asia Festival, an annual multicultural event hosted by the Federation of Chinese Canadians, the Association of Progressive Muslims of Ontario and the Town of Markham. This event began in 2003 and was a vehicle for the community to promote and celebrate Canada's diverse cultures.
The festival will take place on Kennedy Road north Steeles Avenue, just west of Pacific Mall. It will run from noon until midnight on Saturday and noon until 6pm on Sunday. There will be over 150 street vendor booths operated by various cultural groups. Many of the booths are food vendors, but there will also be game booths and vendors selling various multicultural souvenirs.
The festival's big opening ceremony will take place on Saturday from 5pm to 7pm, which will include a Korean Rice Eating Contest that will surely be a treat to watch! There will be continuous multicultural performances and a number of contests, including In Sunday's itinerary is Indian Hour, which will commence at 2pm, and Philipino musical and cultural performances, which will be showcased between 4:30pm and 6pm.
Taste of Asia is a major event within Markham. Last year, it drew more than 100,000 visitors and a similar turnout is expected for this year. Admission is free. Don't miss it!
