Deck Dilemmas

Spending time on your deck during the summer and bundling up in front of the fireplace when winter hits, it's easy to forget a deck doesn't  have the luxury of indoor heating.  As a result, a deck undergoes a great deal of stress throughout the year.  Water can be deadly to a deck.  It is absorbed by the wood causing planks to expand and then contract as they dry, resulting in cracks and warping.  If the deck doesn't dry quickly enough on the other hand, it can rot as it becomes infested by bacteria and fungus.  Preventing this is simple enough.  Sweep the deck regularly to clear any puddles and any other moisture.  Sun can also be a danger.  The ultraviolet rays can break down the bond between wood cells. Stoping it simply requires that  the deck be sealed or stained.  All of these efforts will protect your deck, also keep it looking fresh and clean.  Which in turn will give you greater curb appeal  and make your home worth more at the time of selling.
