The first car garages were a lot like modern day parking lots. Constructed in the early 20th century they were needed because car owners, at the time only the wealthiest individuals, didn't want to keep their new car in their carriage house with a smelly horse. They paid a few dollars a month to store their automobile in a heated and clean facility. As more people purchased cars the necessity for personal garages arrived. But a garage doesn't need to just be used for cars these days. In addition to storage space, a carport can be used as a workshop, a laundry room, games-andfitness room, or to store food. To make these roles possible, however, the space needs to be organized.
