Flood Ravaged Consumers Must Beware of Unscrupulous Contractors

The Flood that hit Calgary in June 2013 was a disaster beyond belief.  With every storm of this magnitude where damages have occured there is another danger to be aware of.  Storm Chasers or  fly by night contractors who swarm  Cities and Townes where natural disasters have occurred.  These unscrupulous and often unqualified contractors  chase after storms and arrive on the doorsteps of unsuspecting victims.

People who have already been victimized by the floods of 2013 if  not careful can find themselves falling prey to a contractor who promises more than he delivers or may take a deposit and not show up to do the work.

In order to safe guard yourself from hiring one of these renovators, make sure you do your home work before you hire a renovator.

Service Alberta licences all contractors who ask for prepayments or progress payments.  If you are asked to pay any money up front the contractor should be licenced by the Alberta Government, Bonded and insured. You can search the name of the business on the Service Alberta website to determine if they  do in  fact hold a current Alberta prepayed contractors licence, click this link or copy into your browser::http://www.servicealberta.ca/976.cfm

If you wish to speak to someone in the Consumer Contact Centre you can call 780-427-4088 or 1-877-427-4088.toll free.

In The City of Calgary Contractors are also required to hold a City Business Licence.  Any Contractor regardless of payment structure must be licenced by the City to operate. For more information about Business Licencing in Calgary you can call the Business Licence Information Centre at 403-268-5311 or call 311 for any City of Calgary enquiry.

Another good resource to determine if a buiness has had a number of complaints against them is the Better Business Bureau. Search information about businesses at http://calgary.bbb.org/Find-Business-Reviews/

As a former Business Licence Inspector in Calgary, I have investigated a number of complaints about contractors who were hired by unsuspecting consumers who were left wondering what happened to their money and still waiting for their work to be done.  Whatever you do, please take the time to check for a business licence before hiring a contractor.  If nothing more, you will have the peace of mind that the owners of the company have passed a criminal back ground check.
