The effect of criticism is easy to see on someone’s face. When we criticize or argue with someone, they withdraw into themselves and become silent and emotional. Criticism does very little to motivate people to improve their behaviors. Criticism is often the first reaction we have when faced with something that displeases us. A first reaction is rarely the right reaction because it is neither constructive nor well thought out.
Today, I use encouragement instead of criticism. Instead of a spontaneous reaction of criticism, I take a few minutes to think of the situation. I try to understand it and I use words of encouragement to motivate the other person.
