The General Hospital Area began in the late 1890's. Working class residents, many from eastern Europe, helped create this distinctive community. Today many active ethnic clubs in the neighborhood serve as pavilions for the annual Mosaic Festival. Housing in this early neighborhood is predominately pre-1946. Single-detached houses and smaller apartment buildings are the most common type of housing.
